Gourmet Paper Mache
Hey, I'm an artist not a webmaster.   These pages are under construction.  Come back. Everything should be working  soon.
Me / Paper Mache Art/ Links

Before I say anything else, I want to acknowledge that I know that paper mache is supposed to be spelled,  "papier mâché."    But what your third grade teacher taught you , and certainly what I do, is nothing like the "mashed paper" methods employed by the French.   And it's a hassle putting on the symbols.

I've been making paper mache sculpture for many years.    Actually, I was thinking of adding a second "many" to that sentence because of how long it truly has been since I started this.    I made my first dragon when I was twenty-two years old.     I'm now fifty-seven!  (I'll bet you thought I was only fifty-six by my picture.)  You can see the face of that little dragon in the upper left hand corner of this site.    I have a full size image of it in my art gallery.   I developed my unique variation of paper mache combined with cloth and glue in an attempt to make my projects stronger.    The cloth dipped in glue certainly did that, and so much more.   Note the size of the paper mache dragon head under the video on the home page.   Combined with my own variation of paper mache, the cloth part took on a life of its own.    Many paper mache artists sculpt with wire and then put a "skin" of paper mache over it.   I actually sculpt with paper mache balls and then put a skin of cloth dipped in glue over it.    It's pretty clearly illustrated in my videos.   If you watch them carefully and then view the art gallery, I think you can see what I mean.   I wrote about my particular paper mache  and cloth mache techniques in my two books, The Simple Screamer: A Guide to the Art of Papier and Cloth Mâché (1984), and Make Something Ugly for a Change:  The Definitive Guide to Papier and Cloth Mâché (1999), both published by Gibbs-Smith Publishers, Layton, Utah.    I am currently working with Gibbs-Smith to publish another book on the subject.   This is scheduled to be released November, 2009.    This will be a really fun book.   It will detail the building of several incredible little beasts and will
provide innumerable ideas and goof-proof instructions for a wide range of fantastic projects.    Because it won't be out for a while,  you should consider getting my Dragon-maker's Handbook if you want to learn my paper and cloth mache techniques.

As I mentioned, I've continued to make paper mache art over the years, although for the last few, I seem to have been stuck in the dragon realm.    There's just something about a nice dragon.    You can't have too many around the house.   And a basic dragon can morph into any number of styles and looks.    The purple dragon in my art gallery is currently stationed in my bathroom above my bathtub.    It just "works" there.     I'll continue to add to my art gallery pages as I finish a dragon or other beast.  Pop on by once in a while and take a look.

Please note that there are other great sites out there dealing with paper mache.    I've listed some links below to some of friends and fellow paper mache artists.     One thing you'll notice as you look around, that there are as many paper mache methods as there are paper mache artists.    I love my technique because that's the one I use.   My artist friends will undoubtedly say the same for their methods.     I also have a couple links to non paper mache artists I like and to some groups with whom I associate.    Check them out.
